THE TERNARYCODE

Every choice you will ever make is positive, neutral, or negative. Energizing, nothing, or draining. There is no fourth option. This is the operating system running underneath your entire life, and almost nobody runs it on purpose.

01 / The Entry

THE AUDIT

I learned to think in threes at a hospital bedside. Nursing school drills a simple discipline into you: after every intervention, you chart the response. Improving. No change. Declining. That is the entire vocabulary. Not because patients are simple, but because the signal matters more than the story. A medication either moved the numbers, did nothing, or made things worse. The chart does not care how the medication felt about itself.

Years later, after I walked away from nurse practitioner school to build something of my own, I realized I had carried that chart out of the hospital with me. I just stopped pointing it at patients and started pointing it at my own life. Every choice I made in a day landed in one of the same three columns. The podcast I put on. The person I called. The third hour of scrolling. The walk I skipped. Improving. No change. Declining.

Positive. Neutral. Negative. Energizing, nothing, or draining. Run your own last 24 hours through that chart and be honest about the totals. Most people discover their day is a long column of neutral with a few negatives, and they wonder why they feel like a phone that never charges past 40 percent.

02 / The Framework

THE CODE

Computers run on binary, two states, one and zero. Your life runs on ternary, three states, and the third state is the one that ruins people. Everyone understands that negative choices drain them. Almost nobody prices in neutral. Neutral feels safe. Neutral feels like rest. But neutral is not free, because every neutral choice spends the one resource you cannot earn back: time. A drained battery can recharge. Spent time is gone.

The Rule

If a choice is not charging you, it is costing you. Negative costs energy. Neutral costs time. Only positive pays. The practice is not perfection, it is awareness: know which column you are in while you are in it.

Try it right now. Below are eight ordinary choices from an ordinary day. Tag each one the way it usually plays out for you, plus for energizing, zero for nothing, minus for draining, and watch what happens to the battery. This is the audit most people never run.

Notice what the audit exposes. It is rarely the dramatic negatives that flatten a life. It is the sheer tonnage of neutral, the choices that felt like nothing and added up to everything. A day of nothing is not a neutral day. It is a negative day that hid its invoice.

03 / The Evidence

THE CHARGE

Here is where the metaphysics community usually loses the scientists, and where the scientists usually lose everyone else. So let me hold both, the way this series always does. Claims tagged MEASURED are replicated research. Claims tagged MODEL are working frameworks, maps I find useful that have not been proven as territory. You deserve to know which is which.

MEASUREDPositive emotions are not decoration on top of a life. They change what your mind can do. Barbara Fredrickson's broaden and build theory, now supported by two decades of experiments, shows that positive emotional states literally widen your field of attention and your repertoire of possible actions, while negative states narrow you down to fight, flight, or freeze.Fredrickson, B. L. (2001). The role of positive emotions in positive psychology: The broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions. American Psychologist, 56(3), 218-226.

MEASUREDPositive emotion is also a physiological reset button. In lab studies, participants stressed into elevated cardiovascular arousal recovered to baseline significantly faster when a positive emotion was induced afterward. Researchers call it the undoing effect. Joy is not just pleasant. It is repair.Fredrickson, B. L., & Levenson, R. W. (1998). Positive emotions speed recovery from the cardiovascular sequelae of negative emotions. Cognition and Emotion, 12(2), 191-220.

MEASUREDAnd the compounding is real. In the famous nun study, researchers scored the handwritten autobiographies of 180 Catholic sisters, written in their early twenties, for positive emotional content. Six decades later, the sisters in the most positive quartile were living roughly a decade longer than the least positive quartile. A meta-analysis across dozens of prospective studies confirms the pattern: positive affect predicts reduced mortality in healthy populations.Danner, D. D., Snowdon, D. A., & Friesen, W. V. (2001). Positive emotions in early life and longevity. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 80(5), 804-813. / Chida, Y., & Steptoe, A. (2008). Positive psychological well-being and mortality. Psychosomatic Medicine, 70(7), 741-756.

MEASUREDGratitude, the emotion this ecosystem is built on, has been tested directly. Participants randomly assigned to write weekly gratitude lists reported higher well-being, fewer physical symptoms, and more exercise than groups listing hassles or neutral events.Emmons, R. A., & McCullough, M. E. (2003). Counting blessings versus burdens. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 84(2), 377-389.

Slide through the spectrum below. The ordering of emotions from heaviest to lightest is a MODEL, a map used by contemplative traditions for centuries. The effects listed under each emotion are MEASURED. Watch what happens to the wave as you climb.

MADE OF LIGHT

Now the claim that sounds like poetry until you read the instrumentation. You are, right now, emitting light. Not metaphorically. Photons.

MEASUREDIn 2009, researchers at Tohoku Institute of Technology placed volunteers in a blackout room in front of a cooled CCD camera sensitive enough to detect single photons. The human body glows. The emission is ultraweak, roughly a thousand times below the threshold of the naked eye, it follows a daily rhythm that peaks in late afternoon, and it is brightest around the face. The glow tracks your metabolism: it is the faint light of your own biochemistry, oxidative reactions shedding photons as you live.Kobayashi, M., Kikuchi, D., & Okamura, H. (2009). Imaging of ultraweak spontaneous photon emission from human body displaying diurnal rhythm. PLoS ONE, 4(7), e6256.

MEASUREDGo one layer deeper and the vibration language stops being a metaphor too. In quantum field theory, the most experimentally successful framework in the history of physics, particles are not tiny objects. They are excitations, vibrations, of underlying fields that fill the universe. An electron is a vibration of the electron field. A photon is a vibration of the electromagnetic field. You are not a thing that vibrates. You are, at the deepest level physics can currently describe, vibration that learned to hold a shape.Weinberg, S. (1995). The Quantum Theory of Fields, Vol. 1. Cambridge University Press.

MEASUREDYour brain runs on frequency bands you can point an EEG at. And frequency responds to practice: when researchers put long-term Tibetan meditators under EEG during compassion meditation, they recorded sustained high-amplitude gamma activity, the highest band, at levels never before reported in the neuroscience literature. Trained states of love and compassion showed up as measurably faster brain rhythms.Lutz, A., Greischar, L. L., Rawlings, N. B., Ricard, M., & Davidson, R. J. (2004). Long-term meditators self-induce high-amplitude gamma synchrony during mental practice. PNAS, 101(46), 16369-16373.

MODELHere is the bridge I walk from there, stated as a model, not a proof. If matter is vibration, if the body emits light, and if trained states of compassion run the brain at its highest measured frequencies, then the ancient instruction to raise your vibration reads less like superstition and more like a compressed operating manual written before we had the instruments. Every positive choice is a deposit into the state that runs you brighter and faster. Every negative choice is a withdrawal. The ternary code is how you do the accounting.

05 / The Cost

THE BODY COUNT

Hell, in this framework, is not a place under the ground. Hell is a state: restricted, confined, separated. Depression. Struggle without meaning. And above all, isolation. That is not just a spiritual claim. Isolation has a body count, and the epidemiology is brutal.

MEASUREDA meta-analysis of 148 studies covering more than 308,000 people found that individuals with strong social relationships had 50 percent greater odds of survival over the study periods than those without. The researchers put the effect of social disconnection in the same league as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and larger than the effects of obesity and physical inactivity. A follow-up meta-analysis of 70 studies tied loneliness, social isolation, and living alone to 26 to 32 percent increases in likelihood of mortality.Holt-Lunstad, J., Smith, T. B., & Layton, J. B. (2010). Social relationships and mortality risk: A meta-analytic review. PLoS Medicine, 7(7), e1000316. / Holt-Lunstad, J., et al. (2015). Loneliness and social isolation as risk factors for mortality. Perspectives on Psychological Science, 10(2), 227-237.

Loneliness+26% mortality likelihood
Social isolation+29% mortality likelihood

MEASUREDNegative states narrow you the same way positive states broaden you. Under threat and negative affect, attention constricts, options shrink, and rumination loops the same track. That is the felt experience of hell: a life with the aperture closed down.Fredrickson, B. L., & Branigan, C. (2005). Positive emotions broaden the scope of attention and thought-action repertoires. Cognition and Emotion, 19(3), 313-332.

So when I say we choose heaven or hell daily, I am not being dramatic. The chart says the choice compounds into your bloodwork, your brain, and your lifespan. Separation kills slowly. Connection extends life measurably. Every ternary decision is a vote for one or the other.

06 / The Map

THE LADDER

Now the part of the map that goes past the edge of the instruments. Everything in this section is MODEL, and I will show you exactly where the ancient texts and the physics actually stand, because the accurate version is stranger and better than the version usually passed around.

MEASUREDWhat the texts actually say: the ascent literature of the ancient world is obsessed with layered heavens. In 1 Enoch, the patriarch is guided through the cosmos and shown the courses of the luminaries by the archangel Uriel, whose name means God is my light. In 2 Enoch, the Slavonic recension, Enoch ascends through ten heavens, with some manuscripts counting seven. The Ascension of Isaiah climbs seven. The consistent claim across cultures is not a specific number. It is an architecture: reality is layered, and consciousness can climb.Charlesworth, J. H. (Ed.) (1983). The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, Vol. 1: Apocalyptic Literature and Testaments. Doubleday.

MEASUREDWhat the physics actually says: our best candidate theories of everything also demand hidden dimensions. Superstring theory requires 10 spacetime dimensions to be mathematically consistent. M-theory requires 11. These are not mystical claims, they are consistency conditions in the equations, though the extra dimensions remain experimentally unconfirmed.Polchinski, J. (1998). String Theory, Vols. 1-2. Cambridge University Press.

MODELThe most complete articulation of the 12 dimension framework I have found is the Serapis Light model, which maps the dimensions not as places but as levels of consciousness, from bare existence through instinct, body, mind, and heart, all the way past individuality into unity and Source. I hold it the way a sailor holds a chart of waters not yet surveyed: useful for navigation, not proof of coastline. Two things about it earn my respect. It is internally coherent, each rung enabling the next. And it warns its own readers not to turn the ladder into a superiority contest, which is exactly the failure mode of most dimension talk. Climb it below.

The Twelve Dimensions · After the Serapis Light Model
Select a rung to read the model.

Notice where the ternary code lives on this ladder. The chart gets written in 3D, where agency is born. The audit runs in 4D, where the mind prices each choice. And the payoff lands in 5D, where thought and feeling stop fighting and fuse into emotion as a creative force. That is the exact bridge the research already crossed: as baseline state rises, attention broadens, gifts come online, connections arrive with less forcing, and the distance between intention and reality shortens. The ancients called it ascending the heavens. Fredrickson calls it broaden and build. I call it both, and I do not think they are describing different machines.

And sit with where this model puts heaven. Not at the top. At the 11th rung, defined as pure benevolence, infinite allowing, the yes underneath everything. Which means heaven is not the reward at the end of the climb. It is the permission the whole climb is happening inside of. You are already standing in it. And even with 12 rungs on the map, the state itself has no printed ceiling: no maximum on the charge you can hold, the gratitude you can embody, or the love you can run through the system.

HEAVEN ISA DECISION

Not a place you die into. A frequency you decide into. Three options, ten thousand choices a day, and you are already standing in it. The only question is whether you keep voting yourself out.

07 / The Protocol

THE LEDGER

Frameworks that stay theoretical are neutral, and we just spent an entire article on why neutral is a cost. So here is the practice, built the way I build everything, simple enough to run tonight.

1. The gate. Before any yes, ask one question: does this charge me, cost me nothing, or drain me? You do not need to be right every time. You need to ask every time. The asking is the practice.

2. The evening ledger. End of day, list your ten biggest choices. Tag each one plus, zero, or minus. No judgment, just the chart. Nurses do not editorialize vitals. Neither should you.

3. Cut one neutral a week. Not the negatives first. The neutrals. They are the silent majority of a flat life, and they free the most time when they go.

4. Stack one charge a day. One walk, one call to someone you love, one gratitude list. The Emmons protocol was weekly and it still moved the data. Daily is compounding interest.

The Test

Run the ledger for seven days. If your plus column does not grow, this framework cost you one sheet of paper. If it does grow, you just found the master variable of your entire life. That asymmetry is the whole reason to try.

08 / Go Deeper

This article is one veil among many. The ternary code is the decision layer of a larger system I have been building for years, the same one that produced the War Mode Protocol for the body, Slow TF Down for precision, and People Over Profit for the systems we live inside. If the frequency conversation grabbed you, the companion piece on vibration, frequency, and dimension goes deeper on the physics, and Helium-3 covers the energy story at civilization scale. The 4D rung of the ladder gets its own full treatment in Welcome to the Matrix, and if the ideas in this piece tend to find you in the middle of the night, 3AM Meetings is about exactly those hours. Even the bottleneck in your own life is usually the wire, not the source.
